This year, in 2015, Battlefield Hardline came out. Hardline is worlds apart from previous Battlefield titles. It drifts away from the worn-out war-themed shooter and transition into a cops 'n robbers style game instead where player teams are made up of police and criminals rather than two military outfits.
No, you won't be able to terrorize and beat defenseless citizens in peaceful protests, the game has a bit more class than that. Hardline plays a lot like past games like BF4, just with a cops-theme. It's still a very fun game, though. In fact, it's probably one of the best games in the franchise.
Here's a quick video look at some actual Hardline gameplay:
BF Hardline went on sale in mid-March of 2015. It's currently only available on PC, Playstation 3 & 4, and Xbox 360 & Xbox One consoles. There has been no indication that EA or DICE plan to release Hardline for Wii U or Mac computers.
The story mode of Hardline is set in 2012. If you're big on single player you'll more than likely be disappointed by the not-so-exciting gameplay of Hardline's campaign. But no one plays a first person shooter for the campaign, right? Multiplayer in Hardline is insanely fun, though.
The majority of websites that reviewed Hardline gave it at least a 6 or 7 out of 10 for a rating. Most noted that the campaign was fairly dull and the enemy AI was terrible but also said that the multiplayer was a blast.
Hardline is definitely a great addition to the Battlefield franchise. The game modes really make you feel like you're trying to bust baddies or trying to score a massive payday depending on which side you're on. This makes for a very interesting and fun experience.
The class system has been changed a bit, too. While most of the classes in Hardline are essentially the same as they were in Battlefield 4, they have different names, are able to use different sets of weapons, and have some nifty new gadgets to play with. A disappointing aspect of this game, however, is that vehicles aren't as pertinent as they have been. Previous Battlefield games had loads of different vehicle options for players to use. Hardline, on the other hand, has a very limited selection. There are only a couple of helis and the majority of other vehicles are motorcycles and regular cars. Although there aren't as many to choose from, the cars and helicopters are still useful and fun to drive.
To conclude our overview, BF Hardline is most definitely worth buying if you like Battlefield games. It doesn't, however, deserve a 8 or 9 out of 10 like some sites have given it.
